anaerobic Author: webmaster | Growing, living or occurring in the absence of molecular oxygen. |
| | |
anaerobic digestion Author: webmaster | AD refers to the breakdown of organic materials due to a combination of hydrolysis and symbiotic anaerobic bacterial processes in an oxygen free environment. Key product is biogas, an 'organically' produced hydrocarbon fuel. see also biofuel, methanogenesis, methanogens & fossil fuel. |

archaea Author: webmaster | Discovered by Carl Woese in the late seventies they were initially believed to be bacteria, but are a unique group of microorganisms. They are genetically and metabolically different from all other known bacteria. They appear to be living fossils, the survivors of an ancient group of organisms that bridged the gap in evolution between bacteria and the eukaryotes (multicellular organisms). The name Archaea comes from the Greek archaios meaning ancient. see also http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/archaea/archaea.html |

biofuel Author: webmaster | a fuel derived from bios (greek for life) opposite of fossil.
A gaseous, liquid, or solid fuel that is produced by completely natural biological processes from 'raw' organic materials. |
| | |
biogas Author: webmaster | 'biogas' results from anaerobic microbial [living] degradation/decomposition of organic materials. It typically consists of somewhere between 55 and 75 % methane and 45 to 25 % Carbon Dioxide and may contain trace amounts of Hydrogen Sulfide.

| | |
| co-generation | synergistic generation of multiple types of energy, i.e. heat and electricity in order to achieve optimum fuel energy content conversion. I.e. very high efficiencies. |
| | |
| crude | Being in an unrefined or natural state; raw, archaic. A substance, especially petroleum, in its unrefined state.
Manure is a crude that can be refined into highly valuable fertilizer by anaerobic digestion. - byproduct is a hydrocarbon fuel: methane.

| | |
| digestate | anaerobic digester output material that is - if digestion was complete - biologically stable and pathogen free with predictable fertilizer value. |

- The physical science of such phenomena. - Electric current used or regarded as a source of power.
- Intense, contagious emotional excitement.
