This report discusses the results of a project to demonstrate and
evaluate a three-stage treatment system for hog manure that was
transferred to Manitoba from Taiwan by a local businessman, Mr. Carlos
Hon. The system was constructed with local enginerring support by DGH
Engineering Ltd.
The process involved passing the manure through a solid-liquid
separator to remove the larger solids; Anaerobic digestion of the
liquid fraction; followed by aerobic treatment. Some of the treated
effluent was recycled through the barn to enhance manure removal. The
balance of the treated effluent was transferred to a conventional
manure storage.
Very little biogas production was observed under the covers of the
anaerobic basins, therefore gas production was not measured. The
presence of methane formers was confirmed, however, the reason for the
low gas production has not been determined.
